Scituate Schools Narrow New Elementary School Name to Three Finalists

SCITUATE — March 2, 2026 — Scituate School Committee narrows new elementary school name to three finalists, with a vote set for March 30. The committee revealed the candidates at its March 2 meeting: Inez Haynes Erwin Elementary, honoring a suffragist author who settled in Scituate; Satuit Elementary, drawn from the likely Wampanoag word for "cold brook" from which the town takes its name; and Venus Manning Elementary, honoring a Scituate-born woman and lifetime Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society member who lived from 1777 to 1860. The names emerged from a process that drew more than 80 student research submissions and included review by the Scituate Historical Society. A community survey distributed through ParentSquare and at the Senior Center is open through March 9, with a first formal discussion scheduled for March 16. The committee also unanimously approved the appointment of Melissa Acosta, a licensed clinical social worker, as the district's new Director of Support, Engagement, and Advocacy. Two financial warrants were read, including a February 26 warrant of $2,087,060.97 driven primarily by the school building project, which officials described as on schedule and under budget.
