Scituate School Committee Pushes Naming Vote to April 27, Adds Third Redistricting Option

SCITUATE -- March 16, 2026, Scituate School Committee delays naming vote for new elementary school, hears redistricting update. The committee reviewed results from a 2,003-respondent survey on the name of the town's new consolidated elementary building at its March 16 meeting, with three finalists, names honoring suffragist Inez Haynes Irwin, abolitionist Venus Manning, and the Indigenous place name "Satuit", drawing sharply divided community opinion. Quantitative results favored "Satuit," but open-ended responses included widespread criticism of the task force process and a cluster of explicitly hostile comments about naming the school after a woman of color, which committee member Kara presented in full, saying, "I do think that we need to understand how some people feel in this town." The naming vote, previously set for March 30, was pushed to April 27. On redistricting, Interim Superintendent Rob announced the project is $14 million under budget, that consultant Crocker GIS has been directed to develop a third boundary option for review at an April 6 public meeting, and that a final vote is expected May 18. Multiple Cushing parents urged the committee to keep the current third grade cohort together through fifth grade during the transition year, and the interim superintendent said he would hold a separate meeting with those families after the redistricting vote, making no promises but saying he was "willing to consider" options.
