School Committee Names New Elementary School Satuit
School Committee · Meeting of September 14, 2026
Scituate names its newest elementary school Satuit after a close 3-2 committee vote. The School Committee chose the name, tied to the brook feeding Scituate Harbor, over finalist Anez Haynes-Erwin following weeks of student research and community input; a third finalist, Daniel Ward, was eliminated in an earlier round. One member said the name felt like "a community-voiced choice" based on public feedback.
Separately, Athletic Director Paine told the board this fall's 425 student athletes is a program high, up from 381, as the district works through a 50-plus-item Title IX athletics corrective action plan. The committee also adopted a new policy barring civil immigration enforcement from school grounds without a judicial warrant, and reported returning $5,087 to the town after closing out a $48.6 million fiscal 2026 budget.
