Scituate Bylaw Review Committee Sets Spring Town Meeting Push for General Bylaw Cleanup

SCITUATE — January 29, 2026 — Scituate's Bylaw Review Committee agreed to bring its general bylaw cleanup work to spring town meeting, setting a critical February 19 working session ahead of a February 23 joint review with the Select Board, Advisory Committee, and Planning Board. Chair Nick Bjorkman led a three-member quorum through unanimous approval of minutes from October 2, October 23, and December 11 before turning to the core question of whether to present years of accumulated changes at April town meeting or wait for a complete package. Select Board member Nico, attending as a liaison, laid out the competing arguments: incremental "drip" presentations versus a single comprehensive submission. The committee also voted to recommend capping the number of town constables at three, agreed to strike gendered and inapplicable language from the town council bylaw section, and confirmed that "bylaw" is one word without a hyphen throughout the document. A petition article on the definition of "commercial fisherman" in Section 309 — filed by Representative Kearney, with a competing Select Board version already drafted — will also be on the February 19 agenda.
