Board of Health · Meeting of August 10, 2026

SCITUATE — The Scituate Board of Health approved Title 5 local upgrade requests for two failing Humarock-area septic systems. Chair Karen Conley and member Alyson Shea, the only members present, voted 2-0 to approve upgrades at 7 Garfield Street, where engineer Gregory Morse said the existing cesspool "has failed" and "physically caved in," and at 102 Humarock Beach Road, pending Conservation Commission approval. The board also approved $18,120 in purchase orders, including a $17,350 septic betterment, and took no action on regulating kratom, with Director Andrew Scheele saying he'd "love to see the state do something" rather than Scituate act alone.

Shea said she personally favors a local kratom ban but would wait to see state and federal legislation play out. The director reported 14 septic systems currently in failure and no positive mosquito pools detected in Scituate this season.
